McKinley Elementary School

The Situation:

In summer of 2021, students, alumni and Wauwatosa residents said goodbye to the old Art Deco McKinley Elementary School that had been a neighborhood landmark since 1930. Next door — ready and waiting for the 2021-2022 school year to begin — was the modern and much larger McKinley Elementary School.

The Solution:

KMI was responsible for installing the concrete block gymnasium walls and elevator shaft, as well as the stone veneer, brick veneer and precast architectural elements. Projects of this size and tight schedule require plenty of coordination and planning with multiple crews working on different areas of the building at the same time.

All buildings are important to the people who live, work and play there, but there is something special about a neighborhood school. We find it both rewarding and humbling to know that for decades to come, the kids of Wauwatosa will spend a large part of their childhoods learning and growing in a place we helped create.
